Once it lands on your roof, it can degrade the limestone filler in asphalt shingles and even create an ideal environment for other bacteria, like mold, mildew, fungi, lichens, and moss, to thrive.

Gloeocapsa magma can grow on any type of roof, including metal, terra cotta, concrete tile, wood shake, and slate roofs. Slate roofs, which are popular in the Dallas, Texas, area, are particularly vulnerable to the advance stages of this bacteria and will eventually form an orange-colored growth that is especially difficult to eliminate.
